View Full Version : Free and spiderable directories

I, Brian
Mar 22nd 2004, 7:00 am
I hope Shawn doesn't mind, but I'm actually compiling a list of directories that are free and spiderable - still a work in progress.

Anyway, thought I'd give here people the link, in case they find it useful. :)

I looks like 411.com is an overture related feed.
To get into 411 it looks like you have to sign up with overture. I had seen alltheweb spider overture as backlinks on occasion, but not anything special to count on.

By the way, I'm new here!

Hi eCommando

Your link checker is a bit rigid. I've given you a link at http://www.pcpropertymanager.com/wsnlinks/index.php?action=displaycat but it's not being recognised. It's not the format, I want yours to fit with my system. However I do have a hidden "pure" link on the page too - so you should be able to find a link.

I've launched a free directory - like the web needs another one! - but what the heck, I was bored.

Super Ultra Mega Web Directory
www.sumwd.com

It just went live yesterday, I've loaded a few sites. I might be tweaking some of the format, but the functionality is there.

1. Posting links is free.

2. No reciprical link required. If you want to, great, if not, don't.

3. Browse to the Category/Subcategory you want to post the link under. If the sub-category doesn't exist, browse to the Category you want to suggest a new sub-categoy for and you can suggest it when you suggest the new link.

4. All links are manually approved.

5. Links are NOT routed through a redirect, but point directly to the site.

No PR yet - it's brand new - but I've got some inbounds feeding it that should give it at least a 4, maybe a 5.

Thanks,

NZ subs were good, though I moved a few around

Added Music with a subs of Reviews, Stores, and Types of Music (with subs under that)

I see web design under Internet - added it there

I added a Home & Family and put Parenting, Recipes & Cooking, Family Games, Genealogy under it

Added Art as a main cat.....

And thanks for the encouragement!

I guess, you are going to be busy with approvals for next couple of years... :)

I have a question about spiderability.

There was a theory that /dir/95.html
is better than /dir.asp?cat=95

Is it still true? I noticed that Google started displaying dynamic links. And Yahoo even prefers them. True?

iShopHQ
Sep 1st 2004, 3:58 pm
Hi tivnet

Yes, that is (sorta) true, but not so much for the big one. Google, Yahoo, MSN spiders all crawl querystring variables, though from what I've seen they sometimes limit how many they will follow depending on what mood they are in.

In PHP it's called a mod rewrite to replace special querysting variable indicators with slashes.

To do it in Windows (what I'm hosting on) requires a server side component.

SUMWD is built so each catageory/sub-category/link is only one querystring variable away, so I don't think it will have any problems getting spidered.

Next time you search on any of the Big 3, check the results and you will see pages with querystring variables in them.

Now whether or noth that affect how the page ranks compared to pages that don't haev qs variables, I don't know.

tivnet
Sep 1st 2004, 4:26 pm
In PHP it's called a mod rewrite to replace special querysting variable indicators with slashes.

Just a tech. note:

mod_rewrite is an Apache module, which has nothing to do with PHP. Pure PHP implementation involves parsing the PATH_INFO server variable.

It is quite strange that robots crawl dynamic pages these days. I saw pages with queries like ?cart-id=1234566
or ?session-id=qweqwqweqw - they all do not make any sense if you come directly from search engine...

iShopHQ
Sep 1st 2004, 4:41 pm
Ahh, I'm not a PHP guy, but I hear them bragging about mod_rewrite.

I'd heard Google has a bias against any qs variable that has 'id' in it.....

tivnet
Sep 1st 2004, 7:50 pm
Ahh, I'm not a PHP guy, but I hear them bragging about mod_rewrite.Strange that "they" brag about something that was born much earlier than (modern) PHP. Perl guys could, but they normally too old to brag :)

Anyway, mod_rewrite is one of the best things Apache server has. For SEO, the most important feature of it is the ability to redirect robot (and browser) from one URL to another, with code 301 (Moved permanently).
I noticed that Slurp (Yahoo/Inktomi robot) follows the 301 redirect immediately and reads the new page. What does it do with it - that's another question. It's a weird robot. I saw it coming to a site every other day, trying to read non-existing pages (code 404) - then coming back, and doing it again and again...

Strange world. Yahoo has FAST engine (IMO a real competition to Google) - but uses ugly Inktomi robot.

Google bought About.com - but still uses corrupted DMOZ.

Sorry, went off-topic...

iShopHQ
Sep 2nd 2004, 3:49 am
Well no, ahem, you can do a 301 with ASP too.

I wish ASP could do the URL rewriter to eleminate query strings. There are some components out there that do it; I tried a free one and it didn't work. So far I've yet to pony up the cash to pay for one.

Three submissions from me today... I would suggest expanding health to include an alternative subdirectory (maybe with further classifications for hypnotherapy, accupuncture, etc)... Also, I would like to see a seperate category for spirituality.

Love the name, BTW :)

On another note, I have started a directory on the Deep-Mind site at www.deep-mind.com/directory (instead of setting up a links page). I would appreciate reciprocal links from any appropriate entry if possible, but I won't currently insist on it... would just like to see a few entries go in

Re: www.deep-mind.com/directory

I see that outgoing links are not direct, but use a script to "jump out". Do you think, robots will follow them?

stoner3221
Sep 2nd 2004, 5:56 am
A directory script has to be static and not redirect to submissions or it will be poorly indexed if indexed at all by the search engines. Directories today should be search engine optimized.

iShopHQ
Sep 2nd 2004, 5:59 am
My beleif is that since the link doesn't point to your site, you don't get anything from it. Since a redsirect link point to a redirect pge, it's that page that gets hit by the spider, NOT your page.

I also belief that except for 301s, spiders don't like redirects.

Much better to have links point right to the member site.

Spot the newbie :( That was not my intention, thanks for drawing my attention to it.

I used http://www.scripts.dbmasters.net/index.php?id=40 after a suggestion from expat... I notice that his version gives direct links... I will look at the settings when I get home, to see what the issue is.

PS... I've just seen some instructions on the support forum that should enable me to change the script to show redirects... Again, thanks

PHP does not get more readable after beerSure! After beer - only mod_rewrite can help:

RewriteRule ^/(\d+)\.html /directory/index.php?ax=list&cat_id=$1 [L]

(the code above is written after 6th beer, as stoner3221 recommended - so there are at least 6 errors) :D

Sure, here it is:

http://www.engelschall.com/pw/apache/rewriteguide/

and

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html

Most of the commands could be placed in .htaccess
If you have access to httpd.conf, however - that's much better, because you do not need Apache to scan every directory for the presence of .ht-files (performance)

Hard to tell. Their after-signup blurb says:

You have been successfully registered in BusinessWeek Business Directory. Registered Companies receive free updates of Showcase Page performance and eventual inclusion in a free listing section.

The "eventual inclusion" caught my eye. As well; I can upgrade my listing for a mere $6000.00.

It free but requires a reciprocal link. It's as sprider friendly as a site can be and all categories are PR4.

If you need to get a site spidered it's a good place to start. All category pages are only 4 clicks away from the root of both dmoz.org and directory.google.com.

Will,
The way the script is set up you need to go to your topic then a locality in order to submit. It can be a bit confusing.

Oh yes, there are plenty of categories which I could submit to, but I don't want to submit to those categories. :D

I can tell that you "like me"...
I never said I liked you. I actually think spammers are scumbags...Sorry.
Have a nice time selling - Sexy Costumes, Hustler Lingerie, Belt Buckles, Sexy Halloween Costumes!
Yes, I will. Thanks. You'll notice that I run a legitimate and successful business and have never spammed one single time.
At list you don’t spam anyone with your sig and 550 posts - on this forum alone.
This is the only forum I post in (unlike you). My signature might be considered spam if I didn't actually contribute to the forum (which I do). You should try that sometime, you'll make a lot more friends.
"Environment friendly" products nothing if compared to sexy lingerie...
Oh gee, "enviromentally friendly" spam? You're right that is soooo much better then selling lingerie  .

You are more and more aggressive...
You call me names. Such as scumbag and SPAMER ....
----------------------------------
This is clearly not nice..
-----------------------------------
I have to note that you are the first person who harassed me so many times and so often... Truly a good example...

Finally for your SPAM yells - do you really have nothing better to do then to track links to my site ??? If you would like I can send you notification each time I add link to my site into the new directory or search engines which I find in my search for SE and free Directories.. I have a hobby of collecting such stuff and also I do share it for free with this and other forum communities... Is it bad ?? Would you like for me to close my site because of your questionable mood ?? What is so bad about my site and why you hate my search engines and directories links collection ??? What is you agenda ?? Post post and post after post with content about how bad I am and my site ???? Ohh brother...

If it makes you feel better -- you are right and I admit that I am wrong.. Your sexy lingerie is 10000000% better then boring solar hobby site..

True... True.. True.. All True... Be Happy ...

Now please leave me alone..

I like this forum and find it strange to spend my time in reading your harrasing posts....

No, I have no intention of closing your site. I just don't like spam, spammers or spamming, no matter what my mood is. Why don't you just stop spamming. It's annoying and selfish.

I did not spam this particular directory as I did links exchange by back linking to directory in question... You abused me on so many posts.. You called me scambag and SPAMER... THIS IS REALLY NOT NICE... In most Forums it is considered RUDE, OFFENSIVE and Inappropriate...

There have to be rules on this forum... and also rules in real world -- You offended me more then ones...

I believe you have no reason or right to act as rude as you do …

haha...Now you're just being ridiculous, energyray. Please tell me how your solar cells and leds website belongs in the following directory categories:

Art?
Entertainment?
Photography?
Recreation?
Kids & Teens?
etc...

If the webmaster of orbitor.net was "link exchanging" with you, why did he remove your links? (Because you were spamming his directory?) And, don't respond to this with "you're harrassing me, wah wah wah". Simply answer the questions and act like an adult. :)

the END

--------------------------------------------------------------
You harassed me and also called me bad names so many times on this forum... I exchanged links with all directories I posted my link in... as it happens I have special page with Reciprocal Links to directories I listed my site in... (http://www.energyray.com/SortedPages/Marketing/Directories.Submission.URLs.htm) It is not considered SPAM if you exchange links... and I did place Reciprocal Links even to free directories as my way to say thanks...

I've been building a list of directories (http://www.theforumzone.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31). They are categorized by the type of submission they require (free, recip, paid)

Hi Guys...

We recently built a directory (http://www.topbusiness.co.uk) from a list of our bookmarks...

Unfortunatley, the Add URL function hasn't been included as yet, but we are hoping to be doing a recrawl of sites for it this weekend...

A reciprocal link is not required for a listing (But as ever is appreciated)...

As it has been built on bookmarks, it is currently a little empty, and as such needs to be built up a bit...

I've been going crazy with adding new sites to my favourites, but one person can only look add so much...

It's expected to be a PR6 next update (like it really matters), but if you would like to do one of the following, I would really appreciate it...

PM with a list of sites that you would like to add, then I'll look at them and they will most probabally be added...

Alternativley, if anyone feels really generous and they would like to donate their bookmarks/favourites I would really appreciate that also...

Links to internal site pages are welcome (In fact they are prefered), so if you have a whole bunch of articles or whatever, I would be happy to add them...

The URL for the site is

http://www.topbusiness.co.uk

Basically, you're free to add as many pages as you like (Even if they are all on the same site (Within reason of course))... ;)

Like I say, just send me a PM, or email me at [myusername] @gmail.com

Cheers guys...

liwei

I hope Shawn doesn't mind, but I'm actually compiling a list of directories that are free and spiderable - still a work in progress.

Anyway, thought I'd give here people the link, in case they find it useful. :)

Best of luck. :)

Just out of curiosity, doesn't this page have few more links on it than usually recommended level. I thought the recommended number was between 50 and 100 per page.

Hey All,

Im not sure if was ever mentioned in the forums previously, but I found this website
www.Best-Free-Search-Engine-List.com to be very helpful.
It has an excel spreadsheet with a HUGE number (over 1300) of directories listed (free and otherwise) and details the ease or difficulty of submission and any costs involved.

I found the spreadsheet great as I could sort the list for free directories, (I disregarded anything that wasnt free) and then add notes (when submitted etc) to keep track of my progress.

Well worth a look!

that's cool but presumably that seo friendly search tool requires links like this to really have value. Unless you have a list of most common word, most common search.
