SE Roundtable: Hire A Corrupt DMOZ Editor - Things Just Got Stranger For ODP (http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/001845.html)
April 21, 2005
by Phoenix

The website, called Corrupt DMOZ Editor was created by a DMOZ editor who under multiple screen names (and growing) takes about the inner workings in details. She is taking the approach that before you can see the light, you have to deal with the darkness. Such as How to Bribe A Dmoz Editor. Basically what you do is send the editor some funds via Paypal, before doing a submission, next submit your website to the category, and voila you have a listing. She also talks about abuse in regards to editors who routinely delay submissions or inclusions for certain areas, and sometimes even erase the submissions. It goes on to say that corrupt editors work in groups even mob units in order to benefit from the directory. You sometimes have to pay a boss above you a cut of what you take in. Whether the benefit is money, one way links, control, blocking competitors from submitting and others. Pretty darn digusting if you ask me, if true.

...

It seems like submitting is huge waste of time, and while I have submitted to DMOZ for many years, I have decided last year to stop totally, realizing you can spend your time more wisely getting better links elsewhere.

More and more former DMOZ supporters are getting frustrated with DMOZ. I have noticed that.

I guess we caught a major trend Minstrel, DMOZ bashing has become good content and every forum is jumping on the speeding train :o

Like I have said before, this is a major public relations disaster for AOL and they must act soon to reform the management of the database and the submission process.

My offer is still open to help them, for $2,000,000.00 a year (5 year contract required) and 5 million dollars in stock options I will help them turn things around for the better.

Anthony, if you add a DMOZ related blog in your blog feed, it can outrank DMOZ for DMOZ

Anthony, you really must learn to put yourself before philanthropy... :o

Ready to admit you were wrong about the power of negative exposure, Tutor? :D

Perhaps we can we all chip in some Co-op weight and get a 'DMOZ Uncovered' site to rank for the appropriate searches... ('DMOZ', 'ODP', 'Gogle Directory', AOL, etc.)

Just post the link at the end of the DMOZ threads here on DP and make a comment or two with the thread URL's back here.

All the editors are already aware of the threads here and AOL must know also, no way they are just sitting back not caring as some seem to think

Let's give it a couple of days and see how it gets going.
I encourage 1 post per member only, no back and forth talking, I will add a link to this thread where things are being discussed. The comments on the blog should be formal and give good examples of wrong doings within DMOZ and http://www.resource-zone.com/forum

That should have them running scared.

Why would they not pay me SK

It would be foolish to let this opportunity pass to hire me, I am sure M$, Y$, G$ or IBM$ will pick up the contract if AOL does not.

Plus SK, you will be the first one I contact to help :p

I don't think AOL knowing about it makes any difference. Lets face it, probably long time ago, some one in Netscape had a idea what to do with DMOZ and they took over DMOZ. That person most likely is long gone and nobody in AOL really cares about this since it is not really making any money for them and it is a problem that they can deal with, some times in future or possibly use it as some tax write offs.
Plus AOL is already had it's problems in financial market, anything you can say about DMOZ, can not be worth than what they have already gone through with investigation regarding the merger with Time.

The simple fact is that DMOZ by itself is not a problem, since without Google, I don't think anyone in the world cares if it lives or dies. It is more important to show the relation between DMOZ and Google. Google stock price is on top and if the manager works for $1/year, I don't think he would like to see the stock price falling.
Has anyone looked at Google's financial ratios lately? let's say the ratio's are very similar to some high flying stock prices in 2000.
Therefore, I think if Google feels that the connection to DMOZ is generating bad publicity and closer look at them, they will drop DMOZ very fast and the problem is solved.
