I get email from geocities about 26 Oktober 2009 yahoo geocities will closed. So you should move any files to your PC and other hosting. Do not wait until due date.. just do it now.

I don't understand what's happen with yahoo geocities.

Yes it is true. Probably it is not converting as it should and it has to be closed like other yahoo services recently.

I guess it is all happening because of the world financial crisis. There will be hard times for Internet companies unfortunately.

Well i think many people must be having so many useless geocities sites by now which they may not be using even so i guess it was time they took it down

If you think 2000 was young, then 1995 was prehistoric. I remember using geocities, I don't remember whether it was my first site - in fact I'm pretty sure it wasn't. But back then they just had 1 ad up at the top. And the urls were based on neighbourhoods so you had to pick your community first. They were competing with AOL which had sites to but everyone was using keywords, so if you wanted to go to oprahs site instead of going oprah.com you'd enter oprah in the keyword box in aol.

They're doing it to save space on their servers. It's a clearup. There are some sites on there that haven't been updated since '95. They are also doing it so that those few active websites that still use Geocities will hopefully buy paid hosting, making them a nice amount of money.

It is unfortunate though. Once you get past the bad layouts, animated GIFs and spelling & grammar mistakes, there is a LOT of information on a wide variety of subjects, and I will certainly be backing up a few websites.

Good times on GeoCities, back when I was about 8 used to challenge my buddies to who can make the best website, ahh, I always won. Good memories. :D . Yahoo is one of the corporations closing down a lot of facilities and sections on their website as it costs too much money to run. GeoCities also took up a lot of space. Yahoo is falling! Catch it!

OH MY GOD! I didn't know that... I mean, it's not as if it's the subject of this thread!

Kind of sad, end of an era. I DO still have a site there, but they can just take it down. I haven't updated it prolly since 2002. It was VERY popular until they put more intrusive ads. Yes, my first site was also there.

That's so sad. Geocities was one of the first places I tried to create a web site. I use to spend hours just trying different HEX codes to see how font colors changed on there. Haha, good times right there.
