I personally think the person who posted should be the ultimate one to pick which one he feels is the best answer. After all he is the one asking the question..

You are right but also wrong. It is a place where the public can share their knowledge. Some with deep knowledge some others have shallow knowledge

yeah that would work if people would always choose an answer, but they doesn't. They got a good answer but they don't want to give you the points.
the originating poster , of course
Yahoo itself can't do that
Yes thats right Yahoo don't choose the answers, but the original poster can choose the answer or it can be done by other members voting for the best answer.

Anybody who has an Answers log-in can vote for the best answer if the questioner doesn't return to it (proviso - you may have to have reached level 2 to vote).
You can even vote for your answer.

I think the poster has a couple of days to pick the best answer and than if he doesn't people vote on them and the best answer is decided by the voters

the guy who asked the question votes but also other people who read the question can vote as well. i think its just whoever gets more votes wins.

I think is the person who asks decides on the best answer, since he/she is the one who knows if the answer provided has helped or not

The asker chooses, if not then regular uses can vote on a best answer. Most people end up voting for their own. :p

Yahoo answer can be mentioned as best answer by the owner of the question, and other viewers can do by providing thumbs up to your answer.

Mostly if the question asker is active then he would choose the best answer,
sometimes voters can choose well if the voters choose the best answer then
it would be open for voting unlike if the question starter chose the best answer
the question will be resolved.

If the creator of the question does not select the best answer within the specified time, than it becomes open for other members to vote. The answer that gets the most number of votes wins.
Of late, I don't really visit yahoo answers, because those points are just for you to feel good, the same thing can be used in other sites to earn cash :)

Well, most of the times I have seen the questions starter selects the best answer !
But members also have the feature to vote if its not selected over a particular time period.

This is the correct answer. Many others are giving you a partial one. As he said, the creator picks the best answer, but if he failed to do it within a certain amount of time, the community can vote for the best answer.

Pretty easy to get best answers. You get a few friends from different IP's to log on and vote your answers. I see people with very high best answer scores and they are not doing it by themselves. Yahoo answers is very easy to manipulate.
