We have it and it does take custom but the "forced" registration of your clients is a put off - in the states they have removed this now - so it operates the same as any other system, I think.
We were moved to the UK, by them, when they opened up here and we still have this restriction - I spoke to them this morning about when it will be removed as we would do probably 10 times more business with them id they did.

We use it as alternative to WorldPay and UK Cheques
I do see more usage of it over the last three month (aprx. 30%) both UK and international about 70% of that are registered users which make it a very save payment method seen from the perspective of a merchant.
Thenew fee structure soon to be activated will make it also cheaper when one has a certain turnover.

I've used paypal for quite a while, and I've looked for something better with not much luck. I'd rather have a simpler solution, but I also need to control costs. I've heard the horror stories, so I routinely sweep the account and move the money out of reach of paypal.

Be specific - what fees are you talking about? The commissions taken?
If so what is the problem with that? Too high?
Tell us, what is the problem with the fees.

I've started to use Paypal in recent weeks and I can say I'm pleased with it!
It's great because clients can pay by credit card and were not charged a fortune for the processing fee.
Any money we earn via Pay Pal is used to market our website online, so it's a convienient way to deal with payments. Unfortunately though, many of the larger companies don't use paypal for the payment of advertising.

I used to use PayPal but I recently switched to iKobo. The registration to purchase is done on the initial page and does not seem so harsh to the purchaser. So far so good. I have heard people have bad experience with both PP and IK, but there are always good and bad. Both are free* and both do the job.

I've used PayPal from almost the moment they opened their virtual doors. I've heard all kinds of people bitch and moan, but I have never really had a problem. It is my #1 prefered method to receive payment. I guess wish I could convert all my customers to paying me this way.
If you have large balances they even have an interest bearing mechanism for you.
I have a Mastercard/Debit Card on the account that I can us for any purchase or at an ATM.

I noticed they are making some changes. Hopefully, they're realizing the value of their customers. Also, I imagine most of the people who've had problems with them run shady businesses or have bad business practices.

Does anyone know when PayPal might not require registration for recurring payments? I know they already do this for one time payments. This is probably the one thing stopping me from using PayPal.

We have been with paypal almost since they started, and used it quite a bit both as buyers and sellers.
I've heard the horror stories as well, but for us there has been no problems with paypal so far...

Theres horror stories about most services online.. so pay pal is no difference, like compar I wish I could get more of my clients paying in this way, it saves me a fortune on paying someone like Worldpay to deal with credit card payments.
The only downside is in the UK you have to register to pay monies, which puts some people off, but rumour has it that this will soon change.. its ideal for US clients who want to pay by credit card!

My first shopping cart was a free paypal one :)
It gives the young/novice webmaster an easy affordable cut and paste entrance into the matket. Once I changed from paypal only to accepting credit cards with a regular merchant account and accept paypal too my sales increased almost triple.
I still accept paypal, I use the debit card they give you mostly for shipping products at the post office.
As me the shopper: If you get screwed over by a bad ebayer, or website you get a fighting chance for reporting easily.
As me the merchant: they might freeze your money if there is a problem, but you have a chance to resolve the problem by either proof of shipment or just give the credit back to the customer. Credit card companies just give you this letter in the mail saying "by the way we robbed you of xx.xx amont of dolllars today. After we push you around and take your money, we will make it extremely painfull to get your money back"(just kidding, no one told me this but this is how I feel) .

Paypal is the mutts , someone in Canada wants to pay me in the UK, no problem, I send them an invoice, they pay it, I get my money when i want to bring it onshore.
I have put mountains of money through PP and never had a problem.

Paypal is the mutts ,
That's an idiom I've never heard before. At first I assumed it was a negative comment. In north america if we say something is a dog it usually means it's bad, or ugly in the case of a woman described as a dog.
If we want to use an animal idiom for something that is really good, we will say that it is the "cat's ass", or if you want to clean it up a bit we might say it's the "cat's meow".

OK, these last two posts really had me going. I'm learning something new with the phrases "Paypal is the mutts" and "cat's ass" (e.g. cat's meow). Maybe we need a thread on phrases/translations to reference for those of us not familiar with these. I must admit, it has been a learning experience! :)

I've used paypal for a couple of years now and have never had a problem with it. Twice, I've had people email me telling me they refused to purchase my application because I only took paypal. I basically shrugged my shoulders and said "too bad - cya" (in a nice way, of course). Other than that, it's been great. I too have heard that there are horror stories, but I've never experienced any problems with PayPal. I love it.

I had two paypal questions:
1) it says you can use either a savings account or a checking account to link to your paypal account... but even with the savings, you still need the "routing number." they describe how to find this for a checking account but not for a savings. where can I find it?
2) if someone sends me money before my account is linked to my bank account, what happens?
dazzlindonna
Jul 5th 2004, 5:27 am
Not sure about the answer to #1, although if it is the same bank, it may be the same number as your checking account. #2 - The money will probably just sit in your paypal account - waiting. You can also apply for a paypal debit card. Go to any bank, stick the debit card in the atm, remove the money from paypal. You have to pay $1 to paypal and whatever the bank charges for non-bank atm fees - usually $2 or so. But it's great for those days when you are desperate for money.

I have never used paypal on my site or to purchase anything personally over the Net. I use authorize.net with all credit card purchases. Never have had a problem, nor have I been asked by a customer if they can use paypal.
Am I missing something in using authorize.net and not using paypal? If you believe I am... what is it and why?

1. Call your bank and ask them.
2. You can use the money in your account to buy stuff on the web. But the real answer is to get a PayPal credit card if it is available to you. It is really a debit card and you can only use it if you have money in your PayPal account. But it works for cash advances in an ATM or for any purchases. In fact you can get cash from an ATM and deposit that in your bank account if you want. I never ever transfer my PayPal money to my bank account.

seo_am - if you are already using authorize.net, that is a better solution than paypal. but not everyone is able to afford and/or qualifies for a merchant account so paypal is the best solution in that situation. compar - i transfer money from my paypal acct to my bank account all the time - never had a problem. 2 days later, its in my bank. but when i do need some cash right then and there, i use the debit card to take it out instead.

Donna, I didn't said I had a problem transfering to my bank account. I just said I rarely do it because there isn't never any need.
Also if you accumulate large balances in your PayPal account and are concerned about losing interest they have an interest bearing option. It is called a Money Market account and I believe it pays better interest than a normal savings account.

I still don't think I'd ever let a huge sum of money accumulate in my paypal account since they're allowed to basically freeze your account and remove the money without much trouble- I know it probably wouldn't happen, but just in case.

Here in the UK you can transfer money to your personal bank account without a problem, if it's over £50 then its free, which in most cases you would be stupid to transfer anything less, and even if you did it's still only £1.25 payment!
I can't believe I was going to pay nearly £400 for Worldpay when I can use Pay Pal for nothing!!
As we would say here.. it's the dogs boll*cks! Which is the more rude version of OWG's mutt comment

Always hard to know who to trust when you see so many bad stories about EVERYONE. Just done a Google for iKobo and seen some bad press, but based on some of the comments on this thread I might just give them a go. I have just had a "live chat" with them and they passed my first test, that they have some level of customer service to at least talk with me.
I had a look at NewComputer's sig links, and he seems to use them for some reasonably high value goods.
Thanks for this thread.

Where did you hear that? I think that is just bullshit paranoia. If they went around freezing people's account and grabbing their money do you think they would have any customers?
PayPal is the one of the first, and I believe the largest, Internet banking service in the World. You don't get to this position by freezing accounts and removing peoples money. Where do these stories come from?
I'd love to have a $100,000 balance with them.

I think the rumor comes from the fact that they do freeze accounts without warning. I'm sure they don't really need a warning since the accounts they freeze are likely violating the terms of use.
I know of two clients that have had large (multiple tens of thousands) of dollars frozen in their account because they were operating adult information or adult merchandise sites. Of course, they probably shouldn't have been using Paypal. I've not heard of any case where they remove the money in any way.
I've also had my business account frozen because of stolen credit cards being used to purchase software from my site. It took a few days, some faxes, emails, and phone calls to have it re-activated.

The whole part about others using stolen credit cards is absurd. They just assume that you are part of it? Why don't they screen out those cards and protect their merchants. Paypal is living high on the hog. It would be nice if something better would come along.

PayPal is very secure not to mention paypal and e-bay are now one and the same company. So what this means is that all those e-Bay accounts holders now are pre-qualified buyers on all the other merchant paypal sites.
Paypal also has neat feature "Auto Sweep" transfer funds to your account just like regular merchant account every night. This helps when you have advertising to cover. Also they have numerous third party scripts approved for paypal in the dev network. Affiliate, downloads, etc.
Been using them for about 2-3 years very happy with them.

I realize that those that have their accounts frozen are a very, very small fraction of the users out there, and most people have had absolutely wondeful experiences with paypal, but it's still a bit interesting that so many people have had problems with them.

I couldn't imagine that Paypal would freeze an account and take all of the money unless the account owner was doing something wrong. I love Paypal and I've been using it for 3-4 years. The only thing that I thought was a little lame was when someone used a stolen account to pay me, then Paypal simply gave them their money back (out of my account), so I totally lost out on that one since the merchandise was already shipped out. Wouldn't you think it should be Paypal's loss since they approved the account to be used? Oh well, just another business expense I guess...

In my experience PayPal identified bogus credit cards faster than my standard merchant account.
I have had stolen cards come back on my regular merchant account several weeks after the transaction was approved. They simple grabbed the money right out of my bank account and there was absolutely no recourse.
I personally think Paypal does a better job of it than a regular merchant account. But the problem with being a merchant who excepts credit cards is that the merchant is always going to be the one who gets the charge back. It really has nothing to do with PayPal, that is just the way the credit card business works.

I've used PayPal since they started.
I use it for my business and Ebay.
It really helped my small business because I have a big ticket item and the customers appreciate being able to pay by credit card.
Yes, there is a fee but it is worth it considering how much new business I got once I accepted PayPal. And, I have a lot of internation customers and never had any problem with PayPal.
Not only can it be sent to my bank account quickly I can also use BillPay for free! I use BillPay alot. Thanks to them I can pay a credit card on time. :)
Kudos for PayPal !

The frozen accounts are true but a small percentage of its users.
Its free shopping cart and credit card co in one and easy to implement for a beginning site.
For some sites the rates with normal ecommerce would be quite high for high ticket items.
Before ebay took over some would have considered using them on certain sites as unprofessional and some still do.
Who wants to pay x amount to open ecommerce account and pay gateway and pay e-commerce company when your not getting their minimum sales quota? Or your not getting any sales because you cant be found in google or ink.
Bad point to use the system your customers have to sign up. Well some say just one extra click would cost you your sale. Well how about a sign up sheet to use your credit card.
As a second or third option for receiving monies on the internet they are great. The more ways to pay the easier for the customer and more options for the business owner.
For a new company not well listed depending on adwords or overture for traffic they fit the budget.
