Is it worth registering .net names for resale?

If there is a good .net name is it worth registering? I ask because most of the hype is about .coms.

For resale I would probably have to say no unless it is a 2 or 3 character domain. Most people don't believe in the concept that if you can get your site high enough on the search engines it doesn't matter what extension you have. Most people would also rather keep it unique with the main 3 (.com, .net, .org).

While I too usually like to get the 'main' three I don't think you should limit yourself. Take a look at w3.org, or en.wikipedia.org. It really depends on the search engines for the people to get there and bookmarking helps to bring them back. If you have the content people are looking for they will remember the extension. Even if they go to .com first and that takes them to a different site, if your content is good enough they will try .net or .org out of hopes. After that they should remember or bookmark it. For resale I would say it is a bad idea because many people believe the same way as jeeplaw. For developing, I say GO FOR IT!

Make money how exactly?

.net has been designated for ISPs/hosting business historically. So if find any good domain in this space, its worth it. There are a number of ISPs who own only the the .net version of the name.

I definitely don't settle on anything but a .com unless I like the domain so much and think it has potential and the .com is taken. 90% of all my domains are .coms, the rest are .nets.

That being said I find that there is no problem having a different extension depending on the type of site - just don't expect type-in traffic!

Certainly. Not sure how good it is though if it is still available to be registered. :)

Still, you can register .nets, .orgs, etc and resell them for profits

Supposing the .com and the .net are both available. Would you consider taking the .net along with the .com for an extra $7 more? I have done that in a couple of cases mainly because the .net domains were being given for $2.99 for the first year by registerfly lol.

Registered at RegisterFly since that is my main registrar service since 6 years ago, but also for a reason.

For some projects, dot com is the core domain, while .net is the network, this is the one holding nameservers assigned to an array of domains linked by the .com

Some Countries TLDs may have restrictions and may be more pricey than the rest so it probably isn't all that worth considering at times.

I would say stick with the traditional TLDs and use those lesser known ones if you really need to.

I believe all is about you niche.

money.com could be as good as money.biz, as for ccTLD's, If you were the owner of proudamerican.us, you will probably reaching more audience that having proudamerican.com
