Directory submission is just a start for every new site other wise they canot get link on some where .

Then social book marking and other way.

When you have some PR of your site then you can start link exchange with other sites. Other wise no body like to do link exchange with page with zero pr ....so you are doing right keep it up .

Not true. Even directory links have their value.

I mean to say that if your site is a little old more than a year ,if you are getting 100 of back link every day google will not going to banned your site.If this happen any one can drop any site from google index.
