What is Promotional Code when signing up to Adwords?

I see on the billing page that there's a section which states:

"If you have a promotional code, enter it here (optional)."

Where do I get this code and do I get a discount?

from what I've heard, if you were a customer of the "original" adwords program (when it was pay-per-display, and not pay-per-click), you don't have to pay the 5$ signup fee.

I believe that's what it is.

1and1.com (http://www.1and1.com) was previously giving away a $25 Google Adwords gift certificate when you signed up for their hosting service (Which was free for the first year, last year).

That is what the promotion code field is for.

I believe you can buy $50 (US) Adwords gift certificates on EBAY! They usually range from $5-10.

Never tried it out, but thought I'd let everyone know!

my hosting company www.hostmonster.com offers a $50 Adwords credit if you sign up for one of their hosting accounts. It generates a new code for each account, so the codes will not be able to be used more than once. I highly doubt you'll get an active code that hasn't been used with google before for free, however I felt the $50 google adwords credit helped to balance out the hosting price (I paid for a year in advance for about $87 or 6 something a month averaged out), since I was going to start using Google adwords shortly after activating with a good webhost anyways. Just my 2 cents.
