It is not possible to make the whois of .ws domain private because the registry does not allow this and unfortunately, there is no other legal way.

I'm curious to know where you got your information about this. I just logged into my godaddy account to buy a .ws domain and I added private registration to it for the whois, which was even cheaper than normal, and it went through without a problem.

Is there something that they send to you later saying "no, sorry, we can't do this"?

I think there's some confusion here. the domain name that you can't use private reg with is the .us You can private reg .ws without any issues. its not free.
