How do googlebot see it?
They are based on alt tags? I really need to know about it because my website is with graphics so i can get a lot of visitors from it.
Thanks in advance!

My guess would be alt tags, filenames, and anchor text on links to the image. I always be sure to use keyword-image-names and alt tags, I get 100k image referrals a month on one site.

mdvaldosta, would it therefore be beneficial to name banner xyz.jpg to keyword.jpg, for example?

Manually it can be really a huge work to change your existent links and image names :( By the way, what about user behaviour ? I mean when a visitor is coming for a image, does he browse your site ? does he click on the ads ?

I think so, how can e-CARDS and graphics websites still be alive? :)

The visitors that I've got via Google image came for the images only, and later I found out that many images were used in myspace profiles and other 'blogs'. So whenever somebody was checking a myspace profile, it was shown as a visitor to my site (but actually it was not). Sometimes I had some hundreds of visitors a day, just because of my images that were used in profiles. So I've editted the .htaccess and I've blocked the image bot of the search engines. I prefer to have clean stats.

I would suspect thats about to change with that new image tag game - I still havent figured out how to get money from it. :o
Google Images brings me a bucket load of daily traffic but also a lot of myspace thiefs but hey there is noting better than having fun with thiefs such as resizing an image to 1200x1200 :D

It really is amazing how many people still try to hotlink pics. It's so simple to upload it yourself (you can even do it with a free Blogger blog if you're a cheap bastard) :)

I set hotlink protection on in cpanel and put the IP of the google image servers in my list of authorised sites... crooks can't steal my bandwidth and google is able to use them...
If the page ranks in the serps for a keyphrase, often the image on it will also rank for that in google image. Serounding text of the image can also help.

I've also blocked my images folder from bots in all but a few sites. It does bring traffic, but using by using tracking software I found that almost 100% of this traffic never converted (buying a product or clicking an ad) - they are only interested in taking your image and could care less about your site. There are exceptions - say if you sold something like "body jewelry" (where people are going to be interested in specific styles) the traffic can convert into sales. If you are selling "xbox" systems or IPODS (something where the appearance of the product doesn't have unique variations), I think you would find the quality of traffic to be extremely low and I personally would block the images. If people are looking to buy an "ipod", they aren't going to use image search.
I don't block images because of bandwidth, but to cut down on the theft on copyrighted images and to keep my stats more accurate. If you are selling a product, froogle will bring you more traffic than image searches - and since you can submit a feed for free, image names don't matter for froogle. When possible, I would advise always making your image names relevant.

I do the same for some of my sites but others more or less open access, I just like playing games with peoples profiles.
