Hi Harry, articles are a form of content, like we write an essay on something. They are helpful in SEO and link building because you can put your links in the articles under some keywords (which are the words that appear in the articles and are among the most commonly (or commonly) searched terms on the internet.

So, if you write a good article with good keywords in it that link to your site/sites, and then publish/post it in various article directories or sites, you will get backlinks from those very sites, and it will help you in getting higher rankings in the search engines. Therefore, it is called one of the ways to do SEO(search engine optimization).

Wring articles on a topic which includes the keyword and then you give a link to your site. It drives some quality traffic and improves SERP because of a backlink.
