Do you know of any one who became DMOZ editor recently? I am wonering whether netscape stopped expanding DMOZ, they are not taking time to add new editors, i guess.

Applied 1-feb-2005.
Accepted 20-Feb-2005
The category I applied for had 2 sites when I applied. It has 7 now, including one of mine. I declared it when I applied and listed it in my affiliations when I first logged in as an editor.
I am thinking of applying for greenbuster of a similar category that I have no interest. That is the only way I am going to get enough edits in to be any good at it.

Just like the Pope.
Not dead, but not doing a whole hell of a lot.
Long-term prognosis isn't good.

I was laughing about this earlier but just read on msn.com that the pope is in coma :(
Vatican seems to deny it though.

so the myth about people joining to only list their sites is true.
in 6 weeks you have managed to add yours ,,,and 4 others... quite a productive month an a half.
(don't missread this post, i am not anti-dmoz anymore....love the place actually....its the editors that somehow quickly add their own sites and ...hmmmmmmm,,,maybe shall i ...shall i not.... add a couple more...hmmmmm)

i would be happy to see the entire discussion removed from the forum...
the WHOLE DMOZ BOARD
and any threads referring to dmoz...
it always ends up with bitching, bickering and gets antagonistic...and there's a lot of flaming knocking about in these threads.
DMOZ is in theory a great place, i understand the editors a lot more now...what they are required to..or not to do...and i see where they are coming from...i would get annoyed with multiple submissions, and millions of 'why isnt my site listed' posts. however they did offer to do it, for free !!!!

It is not a myth. It is a recognized fact. One of the editor FAQ's covered the point. They said they have no problem with people joining just to list their site as long as they follow the rules and list all suitable sites.
As for only adding 5 sited. What can I say. It is a very limited scope category. My submission was the only in the unreviewed list. I had to go out and find the new ones myself. I would love to add more, just need to find them.

There's really only one category that is active at DMOZ by now:
Become an editor | List your sites | Block competitive sites from getting in | Block owners of competitive sites from becoming editors | Regional | Non regional |Where the hell are we again? | Burn out | Complain about another editor | Have your DMOZ login account deactivated
:D :D :D

I just wish my section were a little larger. I keep going to check every couple days and I just don't have new sites being listed. I know its a very specific section but I woulda thought more would be trying to get listed. I may try to take on a bit more or maybe go a level up. Wonder how hard it is to ask for more. I think if some of you guys would get accepted and you got into it you would change your minds about it. Maybe not but I think so. Well I am going to keep up with mine at least every 2 to 3 days and I am going to request a little more. We will see what happens.

I read the guidelines for asking for a second cat. They recommend something like 50 edits. That will take like for ever. I am thinking of applying for greenbuster on one of the not-so-tiny adjacent cats. I do use google to try to find appropriate sites to add to my cat. Just haven't found any. Oh for the joy of someone submitting a site to my cat that fit. Being the noob editor I am I wouldn't mind spending the half hour to work up a title / description that fit their requirements.
From what I read, and it held true for me, getting accepted is pretty easy. First, pick a cat that you have some knowledge and it not very big, but most importantly, list three good additions to the cat when you apply for it.
They claim that most additions come from editor submissions and not public submissions, so the ability to find sites and write a good title and description would logically be the prime criterion for selecting an editor. At least that makes some sense to me.
I have seen none of what I read on the forums that bash dmoz. But then again, I am not in the highly competitive real estate, online pharmacy or adult industries. I have always worked in fields that welcomed competition..

True. When you are a car lover, you tend to appreciate other car lovers' enthusiasm and sites as well. in real estate it's cut throat city

Poor cbp... I'm sure it must be frustrating to him but he is in grave danger of becoming just another Resourceless Zone clone:
"If you're not happy with the service ask for a refund."
That's sad. He used to be someone I respected.

I applied for a category that had no editor - only had 7 sites - and was unrelated to my own web site. I am a web designer, and the category I applied for was "womens recreational aviation".
A day later I recieved a scathing email accusing me of trying to promote my own professional interests.
PS - I was an Army helicopter pilot for 7 years. Perhaps the editors at DMOZ are better qualified...

I tried to sign up recently, spent a long time filling out the form and making sure I was recommending quality sites that were both not in the directory and not affiliated with me.
When I hit submit, it sent me to a page for being reinstated as an editor...nothing else. No e-mail stating they received the application etc.
I know I applied back in 1999 or something but was never contacted then either.
Not sure if I should try again or not. I can't tell whether the application was even submitted properly.
Thoughts?

Maybe they accepted you in 1999 and just didn't bother to tell anyone. Then they fired you for not doing your job. Now they're telling you how to apply for reinstatment. Then they'll accept you back but not tell you. Then when you don't add any sites, they'll fire you...
You could ask at the Resourceless Zone :D :D

I don't have the email anymore - the gist of it was that one possible reason for my rejection was a motivation for promoting my own site.
That's what I get for admitting I had one in the que.

Yes. I though it was a legitimate concern untill I started reading this forum. Perhaps I actually got rejected for a different reason. I'll try again and see what happens.

PS - The letter stated that my rejection was possibly due to one of the 4 reasons listed in the email. The feedback was not very helpful, inlight of the fact that editors are in fact allowed to approve their own sites.
I will review the guidlines again and give it another go - perhaps better luck next time :)
