Totally new to link building

hey, im pretty new to websites and i am just understanding the term and importance of link building. However, i need to know,

how do i get links? If i were to write my url on every page rank website i could find would this give me links or is it something different?

any advice is appreciated!

Before you go out and start building links, read some link building tutorials or ebooks. There are some things you need to avoid to prevent penalties:
-using the same anchor text for too many links...it is better to vary the link anchor text a lot
-building a very large volume of links in a short period of time...debatable whether this always results in a penalty, but best to play it safe
-getting a lot of links from unrelated websites...probably won't get you penalized but creates a poorly themed link profile

To start building links do some research about the following link building strategies: article submission, press release submission, social bookmarking, forum signatures, blog commenting, social networking profile links, squidoo & hubpages, link baiting, etc. Find several strategies that seem to work for you and keep regularly building links using good anchor text.

- blog commenting on dofollow blogs( check my sig)
- article submssion to directories
-social bookmarking
- forum signatures (dofollow ones)
- guest posting on high pr blogs

How important are the dofollow links as opposed to nofollow links? How much do they truly matter in the algorithms? Anyone have any idea?

Yes dofollow links are important, nofollow aren't so much, but from sites like Squidoo or Hubpages they are important. Also try to comment on blogs which are loved by Google, this will help you also get indexed faster.

I would have to disagree about article directories. Sure, you will get some decent links from Ezine, Go articles, and Buzzle, but Google is not giving a lot of value to these sites anymore because of all the spammers that are using them.

Blog commenting is good if the links are do follow. Forum linking takes a TON of links to even matetr. I would concentrate and contacting bloggers to get some high profile links on high PR websites and vary your anchor text as much as you can.

Backlinking should be a regular part of your day and week so get a ritual down.

There is some great information there, thanks to all of you sharing, just remember as well when blogging make sure you blog about stuff that is relevant to your site, eg if you are a flower company don't go and blog on a site that is all about oil.
