Is it worth going after links that don't allow anchor text? And do they offer any value at all in terms of link building?

The reason I ask these questions is because there have been times when I have gotten links from high PR websites websites and I have wondered if it was really worth it.

Backlinks without anchor text, coming from unrelated pages won't help much obviously.
But such links still help to get indexed and receive direct traffic so it's up to you.
It depends on how much time you have to spend to build such links.
Also a lot of backlinks (with no anchor text) from authority sites will boost your SERP.

you should use varities of related anchor texts for backlinks. best way to do it would be to get about hallf of the links with your primary anchor, and the rest devided into related keywords. so it will be useful to have few links without anchor or your url as an anchor which will look more natural. besides, if you are after PR, then it will certainly help as you are getting a backlink regardless.

backlinks without anchor text will still leak pr juice to you, but aren't as good as texted links because the anchor text is the main thing most search engines use to determine the 'context' of the link. Without that, they use 'surrounding' text and your destination site's perceived context in order to make a best guess.

And context is important because it helps to determine what keywords you will start ranking for.

It's worth remembering that a LARGE percentage of anchor texts are simply the site name, or 'click here'

Take a look at a good natural backlink profile. Most of the backlinks have no anchor text or use anchor text like "click here," "this website," and so on. Which links do you think Google trusts more: links using keywords as anchor text or just the url as the link? :D

As with anything else in life, the use of anchor text should be used in moderation.

Make sure the page has at least a pr2+ therefore evenn without anchor text there is crawler activity going and pr juice being passed.

Try not to rank too high for "click here" instead of your real keyword :D

Top 3 for "click here":
1. Adobe
2. Apple
3. DoubleClick :D

A backlink that targets keywords is worth alot more than an image link.

Actually, links w/o anchor text is not as useful as those that that anchor text. Anchor text help a lots in ranking well in a certain KW.

I am asking the same question in another thread and from the answers there and in this thread its becoming obvious that backlinks without anchor text have limited value.
So I am forming the opinion I would imagine that all links have some value but that it really depends on how much they cost you in either cash or time to get them. A link without anchor text that is free IMHO is worthwhile but If i have to pay for it then its value is dubious.

I think there's no problem regards with that but if you are going to build link focus on your keywords.

Google algorithm would be silly not to give any PR juice along with links without anchor text. It is natural not to include anchor text when you refer someone to another URL. The following is a very common way of doing it:

You will find more info at http://www.trustme.com/how-to-get-sixpack-in-just-2-seconds/

Anchor text helps Google determine the targeted keywords more precisely. But I think it has nothing to do with passing along more or less PR juice. Though Google might consider links with anchor text as more "permanent" if you get what I mean. I personally trust clicking external links which display full URL much more ...

I think without anchor text backlinks have no great value as anchor text is really helpful to resolve the targeted keywords by google.
