This might sound like a stupid question but I was wondering whether it was possible to register a domain name without going through a domain registrar like networksolutions.com

I don't think you can register a domain without a domain registrar.

To register a new domain you should only use a domain registrar but you can buy registered domains from the domain owner or through a broker :)

Yes but even if you buy them from an individual owner or a broker you still have to transfer them to an account with a registrar somewhere. You can't avoid a registrar. If someone tries to convince you otherwise then they might be trying to rip you off.

That's a very interesting idea. Do you know how it's done without starting a huge company?

If you won't have a company than It would be purposeless for you to invest money on it :) once I read their procedures, you really need alot of money

Why do you want to avoid the registrar in the first place?

Just curiosity. I noticed there were companies out there who helped you incorporate your business or register a trademark which is something you can do yourself. I was wondering if the same thing was applied to domain registrations.

Here is the company which can help you become a registrar :)
They are the industry leader in this service area and atleast 50+ registrars are powered by them

In what sense, though? Then again, as the others said, one needs a registrar
in order to register and manage your desired domain name.
Unless you can afford to have your own, which isn't cheap, next best thing is
to go through other registrars like NameCheap, Go Daddy, Name.com, etc.
