View Full Version : $85 Web Design PSD contest

Nov 15th 2008, 10:35 pm
This contest is to design a website for a thai food restaurant. I would like the design style to be inspired by and based on the logo and business card, which you can download the source files to below to take elements that you can incorporate into the design. Also, there are photos of the restaurant that you can download if you feel it would be helpful or useful to your design. Please note however, that the photos are unedited and that the photographer must approve of how the photos are used in the design. This should not be a big deal if your design is good and tasteful, I would expect your abilities to enhance the photo and that the photographer would have no problem with your use of the photographs.

Now...I require this design in PSD format, preferably sliced, but I will find out the programmers requirements and update this.

Please keep in mind that this is going to be coded as a Joomla template, and your design will be standard for every page of the website. I would prefer to have the address of the restaurant to be tastefully placed in a visible area of the website as opposed to being on a "contact" page.

I cannot think of much more to explain about this particular contest. I will be leaving this contest on for 3 days, but I might extend it if I feel it is necessary. The winner will be paid by paypal once a final proof is approved.

Thank you to everyone who posts an entry. I look forward to seeing some good work.

It is fixed...logo.ai.zip is the proper logo. The logo is there in black background, white background and oval background. You can export it easily enough into any raster format you require. Sorry for the error.

I think is any of the 3 but basically the one without the oval background

jeff16
Nov 16th 2008, 11:42 am
rakha- I will try to answer what I think you are asking me. The website should be done with a style similar to and co-ordinated with the materials given. I am trying to present the restaurant with a unified image, so for example, an orange and purple website would not exactly fit in with the look of the logo and business card. I put the materials up to assist anyone who was doing a design. If you wish to make use of an element on those materials, be it the photos, the logo, fonts, or the vector that is on the business card, they are attached and available to you. I hope this is of help.

.ai is an illustrator file, should open up fine and compress in photoshop.

I haven't downloaded or tried it yet though, could be a problem with the file

What kind of content will the site have?

jeff16
Nov 16th 2008, 6:13 pm
The site will have some basic information about the restaurant, menus, contact information. Very basic really, but it should be extensible if the owner wants to add more pages to it in the future.

As an update to my original post, you do not need to slice the design when making your template entry.

bizzard - very nice work...I cannot think of any real feedback to give you on it. One thing I am wondering is with a menu bar like that...if the restaurant has only 3 pages to start, will it detract from the main menu?

Ace2016 - I received your entry. I know there are joomla slideshows out there, but I do not know how easily it can be programmed. If you could come up with a more traditional concept, I think that might work better in practical terms.

To everyone submitting a design, please show your design with no more than 5 items in your menu bar. I believe that is all that this website it will have, it is just a small restaurant in a small town and they want an attractive and functional web presence.

jeff16

DrZapp - I would say a few things. First of all, I think it would be better for the menu to have its own page, and not be on the front page. Secondly, the areas of the page feel a bit squished in or tight. Also, I am not really looking for something of a slideshow nature on the page, which the previous and next buttons seemed to indicate you were looking to do.

Other than those things, I would say its a nice looking design, and the colours fit in fairly well with the logo and the restaurant.

Being that it is going to become a joomla template, and that in practicality most of the pages are going to have a main content section in the middle of the page, if you could design something that would have a main content section in each page, I think your odds of winning the contest would be much better. You can make it look nice etc, but there should be a clear main section where the principle content will go.

Jay-gorgeous work...I like the attention to detail in using actual thai dishes in the design, and the simple and clean layout.

I am going to be talking to the person who is going to convert the template to a joomla template, as my concern about some of these templates is in the implementation. I want to make sure if the owner chooses a winning design, that it is one the joomla designer can implement in a way that is as attractive as the design was meant to be. Some of these designs are very attractive, and if they can be implemented cleanly in Joomla I will be very happy.

jay2xtreme2125
Nov 19th 2008, 9:13 pm
no problem about implementation. being a css/design integrator for wordpress and 8 other top cms, i make it a point to have my design be implemented very well in different cms and language. i can have this sliced for your joomla needs

Hi Bizzard, its a nice way to do it, but, the menu doesn't feel complete...I don't know what would change it, maybe the lettering is too small, or the background should be a different colour...I don't know, I did like the previous menu bar more though. I would say overall I quite liked the first design more.

Nice update bizzard. One small thing I think is the hours box looks a bit misaligned. Maybe you can align it with the top of the photo or the middle of the photo, or refactor the photo so that its height is a bit less and lines up with the hour sign?

Thank you to everyone who has put their hard work into posting an entry. I have taken all the preview versions and forwarded them onto the owner for his decision. Once I have received it, I will just verify with the programmer that it meets the technical requirements to be implemented as a joomla template, and when that is done, then I will inform the winner and once the transaction is complete I will make a post to inform everyone of the winning design. All this should happen in the next 2-3 days. Thanks again.
