Suppose the widget above is something that's actually very useful and webmasters loved it. Will the link that's built into this widget provide any backlink juice? Will the anchor text help me rank for that keyword?

Depends on how you build the widget

If you are building it with JS or flash you actually need to have a separate piece of HTML code outside the main widget area as the JS wont get indexed or followed.
