Anyone seen their new homepage? Pretty soon you'll need 2GB of RAM just to open the dang thing.

I tried using Yahoo IM a few months back for the first time in a few years and its got sooooo much crap attached to it, it just about locks up my PC everytime I try to use it!

Adobe Photosop, Illustrator, movie creating software, no problems. A simple chat applet- freezes me up.
loool

And to think Yahoo is still the top search engine out there. When will people wake up?

I really like their new home page. Simpler, easier, and more, more nice.
I also hate yahoo but this new look it is really great. Who knows, maybe I'll use !Yahoo in a couple of years.

tbh, 2 GB RAM these day's are common. Most of the computers come with 1-2 GB RAM's and if you can't buy another RAM stick of 1 GB, then you might as well get a job. :) 1 GB RAM stick costs around $20-$25. For me, I bulk order them a lot of the time for my business, around 150, 1 GB RAM sticks, and I get a big discount from my supplier.

True RAM is cheap and the old homepage is really ugly.

Could you imagine if all the Microsoft OS's and Programs only required the same amount of system resources as they did in 98SE? We'd all be flying around our computers faster than we can click!

I own MS Office 13 but I use MS office 10 instead- it has all the functions of Office 13 without all the "pretty" interface.

Not to get too off topic here, but in my opintion 98SE was the best Microsoft OS I've ever used! More stable and used WAAAAAAAAAY less resources than Vista. I don't utilize any of the "extras" vista comes with anyway...

Just my two cents.

Yeah, but just because you have 2GB of ram doesn't mean you should have to use it to type in a simple word processing program or check your yahoo main IMO.

It's simple. Before you start complaining, it's just simple common sense. If you don't have it or you can't afford it or don't want it, don't talk. There are reasons as to why 2 GB RAM is required and its' basic common sense. "Oh man, Microsoft's vista requires 2 GB RAM to run good, and I can't really afford that and I hate vista...". Those kinds of comments are not necessary and just show how low a person is really. Basic common sense.

Not to get too off topic here, but in my opinion Win2K was the best Microsoft OS I've ever used! More stable, less security holes, and still used less resources than Vista. In fact Vista made me finally learn Ubuntu.

Everyone I know doesn't bother with single app chat programs. Try Trillian out, it's free and has Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and AIM without the attached ads and crap.

I happen to have 4GB of ram installed on my computer and anything I run runs fine. Im just saying that the major developers out there are taking advantage of the extra resources that computers have now and blowing their sites/programs up into a bunch of inflated, not necessary graphics and functions. Im just saying it would be nice if some developers would keep things simple and STABLE instead of trying to update it every month, hogging more and more resources and becoming less and less stable.

It was just a comment I made, not intended to turn into a debate, thats all.

I understand what your saying.. but if you think about it and do research about it, there are programs which reduce the resources which Vista uses and stables it more. I did a bit research and found 3 programs which stable's vista. Before I installed the programs, Vista used around 700 MB's ram alone to run everything.. and after I installed the program, it only used 400 MB's. Everything runs perfectly fine for me. I've tested vista on 1 GB ram, 2 GB ram, 3 GB RAM and 4 GM ram.. and performance on 1 & 2 GM is the same. On the higher ones, it's a lot faster.

The system I'm on right now is a Ubuntu system with 256MB RAM and a 600MhZ PIII processor. It works just fine for managing websites.

My next door neighbor just bought a new multi-core gaming rig that came with 4GB RAM & I'm going to buy his old Athlon64 3000+ rig with 1GB RAM and put Ubuntu on that once the place is done swapping his files over.

I probably wont need it, but I might stick another GB of RAM in it just for spits & giggles. :)

Yahoo gets more traffic than Google. Everyone knows that. Google is used more for searches, but Yahoo is more popuar by pageviews.

Very true.

Yahoo is a website
Google is a web search

if you understand what i mean, yahoo contains actual content for users to read ect where as google is only used for searching for websites which the user will go on to read on.

Just because new computers generally come with more RAM doesn't mean that a site like Yahoo should assume that most of its users have that much RAM. My laptop and my desktop both have 2GB or more but I have 4 slightly older computers that my kids and wife use. They run fine on XP with the amount of RAM they have about 90% of the time, but about 10% of the sites slow them down to a crawl. I have known for a while that I need to add RAM to each of them, but it is a pain in the a** to be forced into opening all four cases and jacking up the RAM.

Not to degrade this conversation, but you said yahoo was the top "search engine" which they are not.

Secondly, Alexa shows more traffic to Google than Yahoo.

Alexa could very well be the worst stats counter in the universe. To clarify what I meant to say:

Yahoo is more popular IN GENERAL (pageviews, etc)
Google, yes, has more searches performed.

However, Yahoo remains the #1 most popular site overall as far as I last checked, and I would assume is still correct by a longshot.

As another member commented, Yahoo has mail, instant messaging, stocks, groups, news, etc. where Google is more geared toward searches only, which is way I use Google anyway.

P.S.- I believe I read an article not long ago that Myspace has actually passed Yahoo in total monthly pageviews due to the fact that Yahoo uses a lot of ajax which does not "refresh" your screen, creating anoher pageview.

Ya they never take a BREAK with bells and whistles, and just let the system resources people have get a little ahead of the features. Right now year after year its the same dang thing, your computer gets better, then make the apps use more and more were just not getting anywhere fast with with ragards to speed with this type of development. It sucks..

I was using a Celeron 1.xgHz processor with only 64mb of ram for about 7 years. I never did any Windows updates, application updates and I bought an external firewall box instead of running all that symantec crap on my computer.

That computer ran absolutely fine for me and I used to to perform scheduled FTP backups of my sites onto the hard drive, then 10 minutes later, upload them to another web server, then the computer turned off by itself.

I could rely on that thing with my life. I had about 17 websites with their databases being backed up on a daily basis with NO glitches for 7 years without a problem.

The software companies (including windows) make you think !!!BUY MORE RAM * BY MORE RAM!!! from the second you buy your computer.

Have you ever bought a new PC and opened msconfig and see the amount of startup programs and processes by default? It's crazy! You can be using 70% full system resources just by booting to your desktop with a fresh install.

I just bought a 2 year old Dell which I am formatting and installing Linux on. I will also NEVER allow it to be accessible to ine Internet which will prevent TONS and TONS of my problems I would encounter later on.

If I want a program, I download it from another PC, burn it to disc and install it from disc onto the protected computer. I promise- you'll never have a problem.

Just found this in my Inbox - the most valuable feature of Yahoo for many people just got canned -

We are writing to you about some upcoming changes to your Verizon Yahoo! account.

Also, after careful consideration, some of the premium services associated with your Verizon Yahoo! account, like Verizon Yahoo! Online Protection all-in-one security suite, will be discontinued before the end of this year.

More Ram but less features and more ads - Gmail FTW.

Wait, I'm very confused here. You say Alexa stats are basically worthless, then you say Yahoo has more page views and is by far the most popular of the two last you checked... If you don't trust Alexa, who are you trusting for your information for these facts? You are aware Google splits up their services to various domains much more than Yahoo right? Google uses gmail for email while Yahoo uses... Yahoo, as one example. So the numbers may very well be off when comparing usage of the two main domains.

They also own Youtube which uses www.youtube.com not google.com, and its #3, Google may aswell be #1.

And P.S.- Yahoo SPAM filter SUUUUUUCKS!
