Is forum posting best for building backlinks or driving traffic? I ask because a particular niche I am does not convert well from forum traffic. Should I not waste time posting on forums then? Or am I building valuable backlinks?

lots of forums have a nofollow attribute which tells search engines not to count your link

Forums are very weak in terms of link popularity building - you need to look through more relattive website while swapping links

forum posting in good to drive traffic to your website. It sends traffic continuously for long time, since your ad/post expires after a long time.
Let me know if you are interested in forum posting. PM me pls.
thanks.

So it sounds like it is mainly used for traffic then? Has anyone posted in DoFollow forums and had SEO success?

If you look at the three auto links in my sig, you'll find all of them have top SERP (well, top three) so I'd say they certainly can help. Though ultimately sigs are the best for human traffic from the forum you are posting on... while the auto links in my sig here at DP do well in SERP, I'd be willing to bet not too many people here are even remotely interested in the topics.
If I had SEO/Webmaster links, they would be boosted in SERP, AND human traffic...

I would say there are definitely better ways for you to be spending your time then trying to build backlinks from forums. It doesn't hurt, but you could probably get a better return on your time with other linkbuilding techniques.
If you could find a forum that was relevant to your niche (this may be hard to do) then you would be using your time more wisely on forums as you get the relevant links and the relevant traffic.

I've done testing with forum sigs only and it has been working GREAT, especially recently. I got 12 one way links from relative only forums and I'm sitting on page 2 for a very competitive keyword within 1 month. Keep it relevant!
