What does everyone thing of .org domains?

I'm looking for a good domain name and have found a few possibilities however the dot com and dot net extensions are both gone. What do you think of dot org? I'm intending to build this site to sell on.

First time on here to any help would be much appreciated!

They are great depending on the subject matter of the domain/site.
Non commercial or less commercial sites are well suited to ORG.
.com is obviously king, and if you merely have the org without the COM,
you will likely lose some potential visitors to your COM counterpart.

That said, ORG can be pretty good but for commercial purposes, currently
nothing can replace a decent COM.

I'd say move on and choose another .com. If you really don't want to do that, perhaps you can consider this new .me.

Thanks for the advice! What about .net? Is it still better to have a .com with fewer daily keyword searches or a .net .org with lots of daily searches?

if you found a site that is .net , it would be nice... the problem with it is sometimes people remember your site name, but they accidently put .com at the end the name, which results in a wrong website. Anyway, alot of online business websites are having .net for the extension of their domain name. Consider for example: authorize.net

They are very known and people always type their site name correctly. If you tell us what your business is about we can suggest some names for you to use too.

For the record, org stands for Organization, and you are supposed to use it when you have an organization website only.

No way. You're better off buying an aftermarket .com or just spending however long it takes to find a good one. Also, which tld do you think wins by a mile or is poised to knock yours out when there's daily keyword searches?

a good to remember domain name on an .org extention is way better then some long hard to remember one on a .com i have an .org for commersial use and its doing pretty good and what i like to do is say out the domain name if it sounds good and easy to remember then its worth getting it.

Anything hard to remember in any extension is obviously bad, but longer is often better and more valuable than shorter, like the many "exceptions that make the rule" so to speak. For instance, I would never pay even $10 for something like "reproof.com," but I would pay at least hundreds of thousands for something like SouthernCaliforniaRealEstate.com if I were in that business. ForSaleByOwner.com, four words, sold for the better part of a million dollars, and I can show you a six word .com that reportedly once had a real $6.7 Million bid on it.

I really like .org but if it is a shopping website or something commercial I would consider looking at alternative .com's.

i would stick with a .com or .net it represent your shopping website better. a .org might throw people off.

I have a .org competitor who is able to have advantages over me because he is a .org with links from gov sites they will more readily link to a .org

In my opinion, .org domains work good as a "forced" option for companies with 3 initials (who can't purchase the .com or .net)

.org is also very big for not for profit organizations and information based web sites.

Hi JemimaJ!

Like other have mentioned, it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. ORG names can be great for driving SEO and PPC traffic, since you don't care as much about people remembering the name. But if you're planning to market your site in any other way (offline, word-of-mouth, etc.), then .com is a way to go.

Wordpress/AdSense websites should work well with .ORG if the name is great.
