Hello everybody,

I'd like to take the ferrari logo but instead of putting a horse I am going to use a zebra. will this be a copyright violation?

I can't actually answer that (as I don't know) but I do remember Jamiroquai put JK in the Ferrari logo on the cover of Travelling without Moving (https://ssl-images.amazon.com/images/P/B000025RR1.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)...

I dont wanna even go that far...just the zebra in the same position as the horse is...no background at all.

As an artist I don't know that to be a major problem guess it depends on the use of it

it is supposed to be the mascot for an open source/free Web Content Management System...nothing bad or dirty ;)

If the intent is to use the altered image as your own logo to promote a product or service, I would advise you to develop something unique. You will likely encounter a problem if Ferrari's legal dept. considers your logo to be an infringement of their trademark (which is different from a copyright).

If you were going to use the altered image for some satire or parody of the company, it would likely be ok under 'fair use'.

This is my opinion based upon my own experiences. I am not a lawyer however. I would urge you to consult with a professional when considering issues like this. Erring on the side of caution hurts your pocketbook up front, but nearly as much as your potential exposure if you make a mistake IMO.
