View Full Version : A company steal my domains

I use namecheap.com to search whether a domain is available. But i found out that everytime i found a nice domain, a same company will buy it the next day. This happened to me more than once so i think namecheap records all the domains that we search and sell those information to other company.

Here are those domains that got stolen:
putvideos.com
videoside.com
funnyegg.com
videobump.com

This is the company that stole it:
chestertonholdings.com

To make things worse is that when i emailed them, the company sell those domain at a very high price. For example funnyegg.com, they charge me USD400!!!!!!

Is there a domain website that is safe for us to search available domain? What can i do to stop this from happening again?

Lesson learned: Don't wait a day, buy them right away.

Probably counts for all registrars.

BTW, what isn't yours can't be stolen off of you.

Seconded. If you never owned them in the first place, tehy can hardly be stolen.

Why do you wait for a day anyway?

It is correct.

I too learned the same lesson before.
I searched for 3 domains, all were available and the next day all were taken.

So i just chck and buy the domain instantly :)

This is a common problem. Read more about it at http://www.bobparsons.com

If you wait they may become available again.

The problem here is not whether i own them or not. The problem is that it is unfair to us because after spending so much time to search for a domain but end up what we search is recorded and easily taken by those company. Is that fair? I waited one day because i have the habit of searching a list of available domains and compare which is nicer.

Not saying they are but figure this...

You are a registrar and offer a domain search on your site...
Visitor searched and finds business.com to be available...
It's valued at $25m-ish...

Question:

Would you program your script to send yourself an email - or perhaps trigger a sale to yourself automatically? It's easy from a programmatical point of view; let the visitors work for you.

Life is unfair from the moment you were born... Best get used to it. Not that you have to be unfair to enjoy life but do expect the occasional rip-off. It's a greedy world.

Of course its not fair. But its what happens. If it was fair they would tell you when you check for the name that unless you register it straight away they will register it themselves.

well, maybe it's time for you to change your habits then... ;)

if something's good, snap it up as soon as possible... it's the same in real life... when you get a good offer, don't pass it up...

I don't think they will become available again, because they keep it and resell it at higher price. They won't just let the domain go. I wish they will because i spent almost 1 week to find a domain that is suitable for my site but the company just easily take it away from me. Is this legal?

Change my habit? Someone suggest me to think of those domains I want to register first, then only search for it and if it is available then straight away buy it. I don't think this is a good idea because what if you bought a domain, then the next day you come up with a better one? So you'll end up with alot of redundant domains?

I registered around 15 domain names through godaddy, never had this problem. Most of the times I would wait for several days. I've always thought of this as a possibility, but fortunately I have only used godaddy for all my domain name purchases.

I never knew this happened! I've always bought a domain I've searched for quickly. I use updaddy, not sure if they do it.

I know this isn't entirely helpful, but there's a site I use that allows you to put partial names in.

For example if you really wanted: heythishereisagreatdomain.com your search could be heythishere and it will list all the sites that have heythishere within the domain name.

They are not a registrar but allow you to do lookups.

Changed computers and haven't transferred bookmarks yet. If no one posts it, I'll look tomorrow for you.

You can't accuse GoDaddy without a solid proof. On my case, i am very sure that NameCheap records because it happened more than 3 times and everytime the domain is sniped by the same company.

I have used godadyy for over 4k domains , some I have seen that I did not buy that day , not available the next day , but most are,

You also have to think about how many people a day buy domains, maybe someone else just had the same idea?

Its impossible someone else had the same idea because the first time it happends was few months ago when i found funnyegg.com available then the next day got taken by Chesterton Holdings. Few months later found putvideos.com available, the next day got taken by same company. Then just recently i search for videoside.com and videobump.com and found available. Also taken by them the next day. You call that coincidence?

I use namecheap all the time and I have yet to have any problem.
Even when I search out names and come back later to register them.

Isnt it against the privacy policy? They are selling their customer info to other companies!

Exactly! Which is why i need to know if this is legal and how can NameCheap do that to us as a customer? Its not easy for us to find a domain which is available and to make things worst this kind of thing happend.

I have the same discussion at namepros here:
http://www.namepros.com/legal-issues-and-disputes/213144-a-company-steal-my-domains.html
and i was surprised when the staff over there told me that this problem is very common:

I've not come across this problem with NameCheap yet, but I usually brainstorm the domain idea first anyway, so by the time I get to NameCheap, I'm practically ready to buy.

How can it be a privacy issue when they can't trace it to your name... That would make the DP visitor map, and all stats packages a privacy breach as well.

Erm... can't you just WHOIS.NET the domain, if it's not taken, wait the day then quickly go to a registrar and take it when you want it.

And if WHOIS record your ideas... you're stuffed whoever you use.

I had this problem with registerfly.
I was registering around 120 domains when i checked them 95 were avaliable, but when trying to register i got server timed out error.
Next day i see only 67 out of the 95 domains avaliable. So something is surely fishy in there ;)
