I submitted my site to a few directories a week or 2 ago. How can i see if i have an active backlink from them with out doing a site wide Google backlink search. Is there a way to specifically look for one backlink?

why not just go to the directory and search your site in the category you submitted...
most sites have a search option so just put your url and check it!!

Ipagerank (http://resourcesandmoney.blogspot.com/2008/09/check-your-pagerank-with-ipagerankorg.html) gives you information about your google pagerank, backlings from several sites and age of your domain.

Once you get your site listed in the directory.. just copy and paste it into google and if they show it up in the SERP... and also you can use advanced search option of google for this purpose.. just place the directory link in "Search within a site or domain:" under "Need more tools?" and your website title used at the time of submission or domain or your website... if you get some result in SE then look for yours one... if it is indexed then you may get it there...:)

You can find out if the page on which your link is shown is indexed by Google. Just do a search for that page, like Ashein suggests.
However, you will not find out if Google counts that link or not. Google's "link:domain.com" search is not showing all the links to your site. They haven't done that in many years.
Use Yahoo to find ALL links to your site. Then use some tool as SEOQuake to check the PR of all those pages and whether the links are do-follow or no-follow.

Google picks up more links then it lists in the "link:yourdomain.com" search. I like to use this tool to check my backlinks. http://www.seotoolbag.com/check_backlinks.php

The easiest way I know if Google has 'seen' your link, is to navigate to the directory page in question then hit the 'Cached Snapshot of Page' item on the PageRank button of your Google Bar. If your link is in the cache, then Google is aware of the link.
There is no tool that I am aware of that will tell you what Google actually thinks about that link. But you can get a general feeling of what the link is worth by the page it is on. Rate the page objectively, and you will have your answer to that question.
