If you plan to invest a lot of time/effort/money etc to brand the name, then you should consider defensive
registration.
Though websites such as Youtube tend to market just the .com, they have also registered other extensions.
For instance, the .tv version is redirected to the .com
One good reason to do this - being proactive: keep away potential competitors/squatters.
Sure, if you brand the name the likelihood is that you are covered by trademark,
however, that leaves you to being reactive.

Well, if you have the budget and don't wish to lose your traffic to anyone else, getting all domain extensions point to your active domain name would be ideal.

Thx

There is no need to buy additional extensions, the only real benefit would be to stop people ripping off your site, but they can do that with mis-spellings and the lot.

True. There is no real need , rather, there is an advantage.
Particularly if you plan to really apply yourself in making your name a well
known/successful brand.

The decision largely depends on whether you can afford defensive reg upfront and
whether it makes sense for the scope of your planned development.

Spending reg fee x whatever number of domains/yr to prevent the headache
of squatters/competitors is proactive and probably ends up costing less
than monitoring the names once registered by others, having a legal team
to address issues later on, attempting to purchase them later, filing via UDRP etc
