What do you do if your niche is too narrow to get many relevant backlinks? The niche is still competitive enough that we will need some high PR links. Do somewhat related themes count as relevant? Do we get as many relevant links and then throw in a few not quite directly related high pr links?

if you dont get enough relevant backlinks, then get as much as you can and move on to somewhat relevant links. thats the best you can do

any link is good for pr regardless of its relevance but if you want to gain ranks on search engines you need relevant links, try to get it as relevant as possible, it doesn't have to be so narrow, it can be general too

For example, my blog/website is about mesothelioma....
I can also get relative backlinks from cancer niche blog/website (since mesothelioma is a type of cancer)

You can build valuable links through press release distribution, article
submission, and directory submission.

Yes. In fact, it would be completely natural for a broad niche site to link to your narrow niche site. Try to find sites the encompass your niche and several others. A link from the broad site or any of the others will carry some weight.

Build your own relevent back links through the press releases and articles. Getting relevent back links can be done by getting back links from more general and broaders categories. If your niche is diamond rings, then diamond jewelry, jewelry, wedding rings, engagement rings.................................. I think relevent is relevent not just from your niche.
