View Full Version : Which domain name would you go with?

I could really use some help here. I'm torn between going with a .com with a dash, or a more brandable .tv - I'm not sure which is the worse of two evils!

(Note that I don't actually own the domain shown in the poll, it's just an example.)

Thanks!

get both, use the one you want, (i'd go for the .tv one, i'd probably look better if its a video/media site) then redirect the other to the main site. a dash isn't that big of a deal, just think which you'd want on a business card. I got the .net and .com versions of my domain and redirected the .com to the .net

Thanks - as for the .tv, this is a TV related site, so the brandable aspect there is pretty high. I'm just afraid of how .tv is location tracked to Tuvalu, and I don't know how bad it will do in SERPs as I have never used a ccTLD before.

I personally will register television-show.com rather than buying the .tv, but it is just me I guess. Most people will find that televisionshow.tv is a pretty good deal too.

Personally I think that if the actual domain name has a 'tv' or 'television' in it, then you should go for the com TLD. I think that tvblahblah.tv sounds silly compared to tvblahblah.com. If, however, the domain doesn't have a television rlated word in it, then you should probably go for the TV, but without more info on the site it's a bit of a tricky one (ie. reviews, tv gossip site, listings etc?)

If this domain is for investment purposes such as domain sale, the I would not register a .TV or hyphenated .COM as the domain commercial value is strongly depreciated because of domain extension type and hyphen symbol.

In this case, I would keep searching. Don't be discouraged if the brand that you have targeted is registerd. Often times, you simply have to be creative with thinking of more semantic name suggestions. This is accomplished by substituting the common letters like C for K or adding an additional letter. Adding additional letters should only be done in the case of vowels A,E, I, O, U.

Let me know if I can provide you with premium name suggestions,

Thanks!

I actually own both (the dashed .com and the .tv). Just a couple reflections:

- I cant stand owning .tv's because the registration is so expensive!!
- .tv's are location tracked to Tuvalu, so that will kind of hurt in SE rankings (I'm guessing). I still haven't seen many .tv's ranking anywhere on page 1.
- I should have put a 3rd option - I am also considering using a subdomain off of the parent website that this new one will be based off of. That would also help with branding, and since I'm creating a new site from scratch and 301'ing the old segments over, it would be a fresh start no matter what.

.TVs can easily outrank .coms. You just have to understand how to SEO these projects. For example, my blogs

optimizerss.ireporter.tv/ [keyword: blog optimization services] and morebuyertraffic.ireporter.tv/[/url] keyword: [more buyer traffic ]ranks in the top 5 of every major search engine.

Since I also own iOptimizerss - website optimization specialist firm, I optimize my own websites. What I use is a new proprietary SEO technique known as "web 2.0 optimization services". This process leverages the power of web 2.0 technology along with a unique blend of cross-page optimization.

Let me know if I can help you in this area,

using dashes in domain name is not good practice
