View Full Version : phpBB Revenue Sharing

It appears Think Bling has successfully modified phpBB to allow for Adsense revenue sharing (http://forums.thinkbling.com).

Revenue sharing is DigitalPoint's idea. ThinkBling.com is not in competition with anything DigitalPoint does (Mainly because DigitalPoint would win ;) ). Check it out and post in the Bling Forums (http://forums.thinkbling.com) if you have something to say.

Note: This Mod is in Beta and will be made public once most of the bugs have been worked out.

Not bad... it was bound to happen that someone else would do it. :)

It wasn't very difficult, but it was much more difficult than it should have been. PhpBB was not built to be modified.

are you just using a variable and new DB field, then inserting it into the ad code like $ad_code?

Where could I find the source code for this. I'd like to implement this into my PHPBB forum...

if this becomes a public mod, I think it'd be nice to credit the DP forums by providing a link to them in each hack, maybe get us some more new visitors :)

ThinkBling, are you having trouble with pornographic spammers?

I am having a major problem with a person signing guestbook multiple times with different screen names but URLs posted all registered to same person.. It appears spammer is getting in and adding info even though forum is not visible to public at moment. I have not found way to disable him leaving a URL.

Some have signed up, but it hasn't been a real problem yet.

If you're interested in the phpBB adsense (http://forums.thinkbling.com) revenue sharring mod. It is now available for download.

Download the phpBB Adsense Mod Here (http://www.thinkbling.com/scripts.php).

Sorry, not to bring up an old thread, but I have a NEW but related question. This ThinkBling thing only shares with the person who started the thread, correct?

How about a mod that would reward everyone who posts in the thread or even everyone BUT the person who started a thread?

I am thinking of a community tech support board, I would like to reward frequent contributors -- people who answer questions.

Thanks,
Eric

Wouldn't this cause a lot of SPAM though?

You could get around that by allowing only users with x number of posts or higher to receive shares of the profit per thread.

Nice little mod.. A few observations though:

1. Cosmetically and in terms of Google's TOS, I would not put the {adsense} in the overall_header.tpl. I would place it in the view_forum body, index and topic files instead. This keeps it out of the the login protected areas, specifically a users "profile". Aside from being a possible violation of Google's TOS, the ads end up covering up the "adsense" profile edit button under the right circumstances.

2. It would appear that when I looked at my profile (from the end users perspective) that my adsense Client ID and Channel ID do not show up after I entered them in the fields. When I looked at the table I found the the user info/ID was listed as "0", not "2" which the mod would seem indicate. What this means is:

A. The user client ID and channel ID do not remain shown in the field in the profile, so you (the end user) think that it did not take.. Looks purely cosmetic, but is it?

B. Every new user that goes to their profile and adds a client ID and channel ID ends up with an ID of "0" (zero) and over-rights the previous user.

In short? The mod does not work.

We fixed this by changing some things in the ad_profile.php and ad_profile_validate.php files.

Ok, one final comment for now. I realize this is the beta, but take a careful look at how the ad_profile.php is written; is this the most secure way to do things? Not really. The data in the profile should likely be sent as part of the session id.

Anyway, not a major issue, though in the future you are going to want to correct this.

I have a number of suggestions as well.

Under the admin section, adding the ability to also specify the google background color, text color, links, etc.. Being able to specify an add type as well would be nice. These are of course all cosmetic things. They can be easily edited in the page_header in the includes directory for the time being, which is what I have done since the default ad colors are not in keeping with the look of our site.

Anyway, thanx for the mod!

quick question, has anyone gotten this work? On the latest version of phpbb or am I doing something wrong?

Mia

No, it does not work and I never once recieved and answer to my comments above, nor have I ever seen a response in the ThinkBling forum to my questions posted there either.

If I had more time to waste I could probably make it work. However in it's present form, it DOES NOT work.

Sorry..

If someone gets me this mod, I'll be happy and willing to pay for it. Some of my forum members are already interested. Think bling's don't work.

Anyone know any other suggestions to the phpbb mod for revenue sharing?

Nothing strange. The mod as listed on the Thinkbling site, does not work. As azn... indicated, it can be made to work, but it took a bit of effort. We've had it working on forums.mccoypottery.com for some time now. I'm just not sure it was really worth the effort ;)

Oh no, not strange that it doesn't work, it's strange that you tried to help and you didn't get any attention!

I mean, I prob would be delighted, but I guess we are not all the same, or maybe there's a good reason after all...

Lol - I was going to say you can download the copy of the fixed version I have but looks like you've done so already :)

Is there a mod I can use with my new vBulletin site? www.mapforums.com.

I just converted from phpBB to vBulletin.

I only have a few dedicated contributors so as a hack I could just put in their id's on a random rotation, I guess that would be pretty easy.
