The bounce rate for my free dating directory is currently at 50%. Is that considered good?

I suggest that instead of worrying about what is "good"... figure out why your visitors are leaving and work to improve your retention.
Improving your retention is somewhat "free" as opposed to working to increase your traffic.
However, it might mean that you have different "types" of visitors arriving at a page which could be better served by individuals pages suited to what they are specifically looking for.
Anyway... it's a fairly involved subject but there are some starting points to get you going.

I agree with Jaundice, and I read somewhere that 50% bounce rate is good, but, never good enough :)
Forums have low bounce rates, sites have bigger.

Choose One:
- Site has 99% bounce rate, but site makes $10,000 a month
- Site has 1% bounce rate, but site makes $0 a month
It is all relative.

I guess a high bounce rate can be a good thing if people are exiting your site by clicking on your ads.

Bounce rate means the ration of second click visitor out of all of the visitor. So you could know What is a good rate .

Yea I have been fretting my bounce rate also. I thought, people are ariving and not finding what they are looking for. Then I realized that my AdSense CTR has gone up substantially. Could be why my rention went from 50% to 30%. That is I'm doing better at making money. :)
But also it is very broad content site so i would think the bounce rate would be higher. On a more limited niche site, I have better retention and get more per click.
The 70% site was always intended to help send traffic to my other sites, I probably need to link to those other sites more.
