I am the webmaster of a few sites and have set up links between them, however the only back link that is registering is one off some directory I submitted to.
Do back links only register from sites that have a page rank as my sites are probably too new to have a page rank?

I was told google only shows/counts backlinks from sites with a PR of 4 or higher.

Looks like it will be a while before I get a lot of back links then

just because only PR4+ SHOW, doesn't mean only PR4+ count.

Well at the moment I'm only getting 1 backlink showing which is pretty useless. That's only google though. I get about 3 for other search engines.

You should add a link to your site in your signature file. That would be a step in the right direction.

I had been told this also on numerous occassions, and even posted it as "fact" in a few forums. Maybe even this one.
It's simply not true though, and my own sites are all the proof I need. Google is showing dozens of "links" to my sits that are not PR4+.

GuyFromChicago,
How many of the links being reported from PR3 pages or lower are NOT dynamic pages?
example:"http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1005"

Excuse my ignorance but what is a signature file?
there's still a few terms I'm unsure of and that is one of them :)

I think I've just said something really stupid. Do you mean the signature under each post I make?

Exactly.
Select <Quick Links> from the menu bar and then choose <Edit Signature>.

Google behavior changes constantly.
Google usually only shows PR4 or better backlinks (http://www.internet-search-engines-faq.com/ibl-obl.shtml).
I am being forced to think of Google as somehow non-deterministic.

I'm going to have to think up some cunning way of getting those backlinks.

I've got over 10 posts, but don't see that link there.

Make sure you place the [ url ] and [ /url ] without the spaces around the link within your signature.

The menu bar? You don't see one that says:
User CP : FAQ/Rules : Members List : Calendar : New Posts : Search : Quick Links : Tools : Log Out
Or is it the Edit Signature option under the Quick Links menu that you don't see?
Here is a direct link to the Edit Signature (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/profile.php?do=editsignature) page.

Technically it's the first 25th minute after you have 10 posts that it will appear.
The system runs an hourly cron job (on the 25th minute of the hour) to look for user promotions. :)

is that for all vbs or is this a custom thing?
how exactly could vb manage to set up cron jobs?

All Vbulletin's do cron jobs-the amount of time is variable...mine is every hour.

It's for all vBulletin 3...
In the admin control panel, there is a scheduled tasks manager.

Did this just start with VB3? I have a forum with VB2 and don't remember seeing it.

I'm still on vb2 and I'm pretty sure there's no "scheduled tasks"- if it is there, it's hidden pretty well

I'm almost 100% sure it's VB3 exclusive.
